How (I’m Trying to) Practice Body Positivity in Quarantine

Since coming home a few months ago for what I thought would be a few short weeks with my family has quickly turned into staying put for the foreseeable future—with a scary, unknown situation unfolding in every which way around us. I am lucky enough to have a remote job that is not (currently) affected by this, but I know there are many people in less fortunate situations than me, or even working on the front lines of this pandemic. I absolutely feel for and empathize with everyone in the world fighting their own battles right now, and I can’t say that enough.

I’ve contemplated what to write on my blog—if anything at all—during this time. And while I can’t provide answers to you on the pandemic, jobs, or anything else for that matter, what I think I can provide is a little realness about my own struggles with my body image during this time and how I’m working on being positive—in hopes it resonates with anyone else out there struggling. It’s fricken’ hard.

We’ve all heard the jokes (or joked ourselves) about the impact this situation is having on our bodies. We are eating differently than normal—and if you’re like me, more frequently—and we are stressed AF in addition. There is no doubt our bodies can—and will—see fluctuations, and it feels hard not to fixate on that at times. Or at least for me it does.

In my eyes, I can’t control a lot of things in this situation, but I do have control over how I talk to and treat myself. These are some things I’m trying to focus on in each day:

    1. Saying my positive affirmations aloud everyday. The mornings can sometimes be the worst. I wake up and might think, “Welp, here we go again.” So when I wake up, I’m trying to head straight into my bathroom to look at myself in the mirror and tell myself my positive affirmations, whatever those are. “You are smart, beautiful, and strong.” What do you need to tell yourself everyday? Make a list of whatever it is you need and say it out loud. Every day. I know I always preach about this—but right now, I think doing this for ourselves is more important than ever.
    2. Watching out for negative talk about food, and trying to turn it positive (if I can). Food is one of the things that brings us joy in these days, but there’s no question it’s bringing each one of us a different layer of guilt or shame. How many times have you said something negative about how much you’re eating, or how you’re going to “roll out of quarantine?” Yep, I’m guilty too. But we are in a stressful time and I’m really trying to watch out for this negativity. Instead of focusing on what I’m eating, the amount, whatever it is—why not focus on how grateful I am for positive things in my life right now? Like the fact that I’m home with my family, safe, etc. The food I’m eating or even how I’m spending my days doesn’t need to be a source of negativity. We’re all just doing our best, and we’re more than allowed to eat. I’m trying to stop shaming myself for doing so.
    3. Keeping things on my list every single day that make me happy and bring me joy, even on days when I don’t want to do them. Some days are harder than others. Some days I wake up with a more positive attitude and some days I just don’t. It’s a lonely, isolating feeling, and it’s unknown. I’ve learned that there are many things in my days that do make me happy—exercise (even if most of the time I don’t want to do it), calling friends and family to check in (even though there are seldom updates), writing (now’s a good time for me to finish my novel, right?), and other things that may even change as this goes on. Whatever those things are, I’m trying to constantly evaluate and find small ways to make myself happy in every day, which extends to my body both directly and indirectly. This week it might be TikTok-ing and reading, next week it might be painting—who really knows—but I will continue to look for what gives me joy each day and make my best effort to make it happen.
    4. Skipping stepping on the scale and trying on my jeans. It’s tempting, but focusing on our weight and appearances is the last thing we need to be doing right now (in my humble opinion). We are trying to survive, so we have to forgive ourselves if our goals aren’t on the fast track right now and our jeans are a little snug after all this (darn it, I didn’t even bring jeans home!). As tempting as it is to get caught up in our weight and what we “should” be doing with our bodies, to me it’s more helpful to focus on somehow incorporating movement into my day and staying as mentally positive as I can. My weight has nothing to do with that right now, so I’m trying my best not to let it.

This list is by no means here to tell you I’m doing all of these perfectly—I’m certainly not. But I am trying to work on them every single day, and thought sharing with you all might resonate with someone out there.

If you have your own strategies for staying positive during this time, please tell me! I’d love to hear from you.

Stay safe, healthy, and don’t forget to show yourself the love and care you deserve during these crazy times. I know I’m trying, too!

    XOXO, Kenzie

  • The Curve Confessions: A Year in Reflection

The Curve Confessions: A Year in Reflection

It’s crazy to think one year ago exactly, after months of preparation (and some nerves), I launched The Curve Confessions – with no idea of what to expect. And now here we are, a year later, and my wildest dreams about the blog have been completely blown out of the water. So I couldn’t help but to capture this past year’s memories, take some cheesy photos, and talk about what’s to come.

Looking back, I’ve had some major wins that I can’t help but freak out about, like a few of my Instagram posts being recognized by supermodel Denise Bidot (we’re besties now), Ashley Graham liking a comment I left on her Instagram (still trying to get her to become a fan of the CC), and not to mention the countless inspiring and meaningful conversations with friends, family, and those I don’t even know, about the impact my blog is having on them. I probably didn’t do everything that happened this year justice, but let’s just call that the highlight reel – holy smokes.

But behind all the 32 blog posts, thousands of page views, my (small) band of blog and social media followers, and the countless hours of (fun) work I’ve put into this – what means the most is the overwhelming support I’ve felt. I went out on a limb with this concept, revealed personal stories and hard times, and showed you all my true self through my writing. And to feel like that’s being recognized, even if it’s my small band of followers, is exceeding all expectations I could have ever had.

When I created the blog, a friend asked me, “What’s one thing you want out of this?” I responded, “Honestly, if it makes a difference in one person’s life and helps them in some way, that’s all I really want.” Fortunately I can come out of this year confident that I’ve achieved this – and that alone keeps me motivated as ever to continue (other than the fact that I friggin love it).

But the confidence this blog has given me extends even further than that. This past year, I feel like I’ve grown even more in-tune with myself, my body, and find my confidence continually growing. I don’t think I realized how much I’d feel a part of the body image movement when I started this blog – and though I’m no Ashley Graham, I feel like my words have power. And because of that, I’m taking every opportunity I can to promote my message of self love, body positivity, and empowerment. I also now feel like I really embody what I’m saying in my blog – and it’s an exciting feeling to be behind something I feel so strongly about (and have struggled with very personally).

I’m going to end this sappy post with my goals and thoughts for this next year of The Curve Confessions:

    1. Get Ashley Graham to follow me/like my s*** (don’t mind me, I’ll just be continuing to stalk her this year)

    2. More fashion, please! I’ve been loving the photoshoots I’ve done, and want to show you more of my style. This year, I’m planning to do just that.

    3. Also want to show more of the daily life – what I’m eating, workouts, etc. – a friend suggested this to me and I think it’s a great idea. Though I’m not celeb status (clearly), the blog’s all about a healthy and happy life, so might as well let you all into mine more!

    4. But as much as I know you all love me, I am definitely going to keep it going with The Curve Confessionals! I love hearing other people’s stories and can’t wait to continue interviewing people this year.

    5. YouTube channel or podcasting, anyone? I’ve been noodling on these ideas for a while, and this year might just be the year.

That’s what I’ve got for now – all of my other ideas will typically come at late hours of the night – and I’ll be sure to write them down in my notebook per usual. 🙂

Thanks to all of my supporters, near and far, for making this one of the most incredible years of my life. The Curve Confessions has absolutely changed my life for the better, and I can’t wait to keep it going! So much love for all of you. Xoxo

  • Ladies, it ain’t easy being independent (but here’s how to make it better)

Ladies, it ain’t easy being independent (but here’s how to make it better)

Becoming happy and comfortable on my own has been a huge focus of mine this past year. While I’ve been pretty independent my whole life, I’ve pretty much always focused on being around people and finding my next opportunity to do so – not always focusing on or enjoying my time alone. While wanting to be around people is definitely a good thing – it’s also important to learn to be happy on your own. And this doesn’t just mean finding things to do when by yourself (which sounds obvious), but learning how to love and embrace it (and seeking out the time to do so, just like you do with friends).

As I was writing this, I was sitting on the lakefront and taking in the beautiful scenery, and it was peaceful and amazing.  Looking around, I saw couples everywhere, groups of friends running, and then there was me – walking with my coffee in hand (naturally) and headphones blasting. While there’s obviously nothing wrong with that, I have to admit that I still have moments every once in a while where I get a little anxious – what should I be doing? What’s my plan? Where am I going? That’s partly my personality of not really having a plan (which is great in many respects), but also a part of life that gives me anxiety. But it’s also just a part of being alone, and part of the whole journey.

I love being spontaneous, and doing so brings me many adventures in life. But many of my adventures can also be solo treks where I don’t know my destination half the time.  It could be brunch or scheduled plans with friends, but some Sunday’s, it’s an open day and may involve a whole lot of me time. I stay pretty busy, but I do find myself in solo situations quite often, and I’ve learned to love it. Independence is a beautiful thing – and it’s an important thing to embrace.

But let me be the first to tell you, it’s not always easy. I think we’ve all been there, where we feel weird, bored, unsure, or whatever it is while alone, but it really doesn’t have to feel like this. This past year, here are a few things I’ve focused on to start enjoying my alone time more than ever:

    • Do things alone that make you feel good. For me, that can be writing, cleaning, exercising, etc., but this could be a whole range of things. It may sound obvious, but sometimes we forget to focus on ourselves when we’re alone and don’t really stop to think what would make us happy in the moment. Whatever it is, find a way to do it. (Something that really helped me with this was a happiness journal I bought from Paper Source; it has been life changing to really dig deep into what really makes me happy/unhappy in life.)
    • Have fun with it. This may not come as a shock to people, but sometimes I just put music on and dance in my room, alone. Yes, no one else is in the room and it may sound weird, but it’s seriously so liberating and fun. If you can have fun on your own, it’s only going to make you continue to love your independent time, which can also help you to find love for yourself. Then, being alone becomes less of a chore and more of something you’re excited about.
    • Do things that scare you. Sometimes the moments of heightened anxiety help you learn the most. So try a new coffee shop, volunteer at an organization, join a random sports league, go to movies alone; do things that are out of your typical wheelhouse, and I promise it will be a good learning experience and ultimately help in your journey.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love being around people and think that’s where I thrive most. But being okay and comfortable when it’s just me, no matter the situation, that’s when I’ve really discovered myself, and found happiness and self love.

So take some time this week to yourself – however that is, whether it’s taking a bath for an hour with no phone, or going on a long walk and listening to music (or, my personal favorite, dancing like a fool in your room). Whatever it is, I challenge you to do it because you want to, not because you have to. 🙂

  • New Year’s Resolutions from the Curves

New Year’s Resolutions from the Curves

It’s crazy to think we’re about to have another year under our belts, y’all. But 2017 is upon us, so I know you’ve all been setting your “resolutions” to head into the New Year right.

I feel very fortunate to say this year has been one of my best yet – and I’m genuinely excited about what the New Year has in store. But quite honestly, looking back, a lot of my past resolutions have revolved around my weight – whether it’s been to “lose weight,” “workout more,” “eat healthier” – or some variation of the three. This year, my list looks a whole lot different, so I want to share it.

Here are my 2017 resolutions in a nutshell:

    • Wear heels more. Okay, this may sound weird ha, but I’m pretty tall – and I like exhuding that confidence at work (and in general) when I walk in a room with some extra height. Heels also add pizazz to any outfit, which, why wouldn’t I add?! Heels are only going to up my game in 2017, so expect to see more of them!
    • Love & cherish life. Knowing how precious and short life is just makes me want to go out and live it to the fullest everyday, and cherish what I have (yes, this includes my curves!). So this year, I’m going to do just that.
    • Be a better me. This year, I started tutoring at a great organization in the city for economically disadvantaged students, and I absolutely love it. Doing things for others is what it’s all about, so I’m challenging myself to keep doing this kind of good in 2017. I’m also challenging myself to keep treating my mind and body right, keep staying in touch regularly with family and friends, and keeping up with the blog and making you all feel good – which in turn will make me a better me.

What are your resolutions for 2017? If they have anything to do with losing weight, just know, you look amazing the way you are 🙂

Thanks for making my blog one of the highlights of my year – I’m excited for what’s to come in 2017!

  • Fall Fashion Tips from the Curves

Fall Fashion Tips from the Curves

My blog wasn’t originally intended for the fashion side of things – but it’s been really fun showing you all my style thus far. And back when I created the blog, an old classmate asked if I’d consider doing a post around dressing your body type – well, here it is! Hopefully this helps you shape your personal style, and gives you some fashion pointers or inspiration you can start using yourself.

What better time do this than fall, which is my favorite fashion season. So I’ve broken down a few of my quick fashion tips, and a compilation of my fave fall staples. Let’s start with the staples.

The things I can’t go without:

    • Black leggings (that look like pants): I buy these at Nordstrom every year and they are STAPLES during the fall and winter seasons. They’re tight, but comfortable, and appear like pants so they can pass in a work setting too (depending on how formal your work is). Check them out here.
    • Black under tank: I have two of these from a boutique in my hometown of Elmhurst, Kie and Kate. They are life-changing. Whenever you have something see through, need a little extra hold under your top, or if you’re like me and wear sweaters and just want to wear a plain tank under, these are it. They’re one-size-fits-all, so no need to even figure out which one you need 🙂 Regardless if you go to Kie and Kate, or somewhere else, just find an under tank that sucks you in and is comfortable.
    • Staple bag: I have my black bag from Nordstrom Rack that’s Steve Madden, and I use it almost everyday. It can honestly pull an outfit together, fits all of my stuff (including laptop), and has straps that allow me to either hold on my wrist or strap across my shoulder. It’s an essential in the fallSee outfit 4 below.
    • Jewelry, jewelry, jewelry: Earrings, necklaces, watches, bangles – they all make a difference (ok, duh, you know). But I usually pick a pair of earrings to go in my first piercing hole, and then have some fun with my other piercings and cartilage (which is usually a small ring). I personally love earrings and can’t live without mine, but I know it’s hard changing them all the time – so I stick to one white or beige pair right now that match pretty much everything. Necklaces, chokers, etc. depend on the outfit, but we’ll get to that.
    • Stylish Overcoat: I found my overcoat coat a while back at the Rack (pictures coming), and it can seriously amp up an outfit. It’s beige and a light wool, with a leather trim, and falls a bit above my knees. It has a serious professional vibe, and though it’s not as warm as my thick winter coat, I like to wear it when I’m trying to look nice.

    My Top Curve Fashion Tips:

    1. If you’re fidgeting, go a size up: This may sound obvious, but I’ve found that going up a size can help that uncomfortable feeling we’ve all felt before. With the Bomber jacket you’ll see below, I tried it on and it felt snug. I went a size up and felt SO much more comfortable. It may hurt your pride to go grab a bigger size (though I don’t want it to), but it’s worth it in the long run! My favorite places for pants are Nordstrom Rack and recently, Forever 21. If you’re looking for bigger tops because these stores aren’t doing it for you – try Target or Forever 21 Plus.
    2. Layer, layer, layer: I know I’ve talked a lot about my black tank, but that thing can change a feeling of an outfit. It tightens everything up while staying comfortable, and I wear it under almost everything. I think the biggest thing for me is that it keeps everything feeling firm. There’s nothing wrong with sucking it all in underneath your actual outfit (I also LOVE wearing spanks with tighter things). I also like to add things like blazers, sweaters, etc. if you don’t like wearing super tight stuff all the time like me.
    3. Start with the essentials: It all starts with a good fitting bra and underwear. Without that, your outfit won’t feel right. If you haven’t in a while, go out and buy a new fresh bra that supports you and fits well. This is something I’ve found that can change how I feel in an outfit (even though it seems obvious to wear under garments that fit).
    4. Stay true to yourself, no matter how crazy: All my friends know that leopard and red are two of my favorite things. So whenever I want to, I add it to my outfits. It gives you your own personal flare. So find something you love about your fashion and that screams you, and buy a bunch of it! It’s so fun finding ways to add leopard or a color to my outfits, whether it’s a scarf, lipstick, whatever.

Now, let’s get to some of my favorite fall looks (outfit details at the bottom):

    #1:

This sweater was a solid purchase – it can be dressed up or down, and paired with many different things (like scarf, necklace, etc.). The jeans, boots and camel hat top it all off – and the black tank that I swear by sucks it all in 🙂 Shoes are from DSW and absolute show stoppers.

I live in this sweater (plus, it helped the Cubs win the World Series). This vibe is a bit more comfy/cozy, but the red lip and choker give it a pop. Oh, and absolutely love adding the high mini bun to any outfit.

More of a bad ass look here, perfect for hitting a Saturday on the town. I LOVE my new olive green bomber – it ramps up any outfit and can be dressed up or down. Leopard backpack is just so much yes.

    #4:

This entire outfit is from the Rack (aka my obsession), and a frequent for work. The blazer adds a professional vibe to the outfit, while still keeping it fashionable!

    #5:

    IMG_8605.JPG
This sweater is like a blanket – LOVE. Purse and shoes add a pop of color, but this outfit is the epitome of comfort meeting fashion.

My biggest fashion rules are comfort, color and curve (okay, shape but three C’s was cool). If I tug at my clothes when I put them on or doubt myself for a second when looking in the mirror, that outfit goes out the window. It’s important to be confident and comfortable – and that’s what I live by with my fashion these days. Also, wherever I can add a pop of red or leopard, I sure do.
